The purpose of “Dumb and Dumber” is to make you laugh, and it made me laugh like hell. This is one the funniest movies I have seen. I was laughing so hard I must have looked a fool, especially at the atomic pepper and the orange and blue tuxedos.

This film was a one-of-kind comedy and there has not been a similar laugh to match it.

    My Rating –
Directed by Peter Farrelly, Bobby Farrelly
Starring Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Lauren Holly, Mike Starr
Screenplay by Peter Farrelly, Bobby Farrelly, Bennett Yellin
    Original Music by Todd Rundgren
    Runtime – 107 mins.
    PG_13

“Dumb and Dumb” has been, by far, Jim Carrey‘s most memorable film. And combined with Jeff Daniels, the duo brings a humor that can be watched over and over. There is something about Jim Carrey that I still can’t figure out.

I hated him in “Ace Ventura,” “The Number 23″ and “Bruce Almighty“…yet loved him in “Dumb and Dumber,” “Liar Liar” and “The Truman Show.” It could be the mannerisms and the quirky personality that i disliked. In “Dumb and Dumber,” Carrey is mostly normal, just very stupid.

The beginning of the film opens with the dead beat duo Harry (Daniels) and Lloyd (Carrey). They seem to have trouble holding a job…a lack of intelligence is a good reason, but also bad luck. The first few scenes of the film show how much of losers these two guys are and how easy it is for them to lose their jobs…limo accidents and vomiting dogs.

However, when Lloyd meets the troubled, yet beautiful Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly), he immediately falls in love. After his “love at first sight” with Mary, Lloyd mistakenly takes her money-filled briefcase, that was supposed to be used as ransom money for Mary’s husband.

Lloyd and Harry must travel across the entire country, from Providence to Aspen, to deliver the briefcase. The majority of the film focuses on their trip and just how obtuse these two guys are. The best parts though, in my opinion, is when they find out the briefcase is filled with money and end up acting like morons with Lamborghini’s, wearing the most ridiculous outfits imaginable.

There were not many scenes i didn’t like in “Dumb and Dumber.” It has a certain simplicity and stupidity that make it hilarious. The plot is simple – two guys traveling across the country to deliver a briefcase filled with money – but the excellent screenplay and dialogue make it hilarious.

“One time, we successfully mated a bulldog and a Shih-tzu…we called it a bull-shit.”
    –Harry Dunn

Director Peter Farrelly, also known for “Me, Myself and Irene” and “Shallow Hal” considered actors such as Rob Lowe, Steve Martin and Martin Short for the roles of Harry and Lloyd. I am happy he casted Carrey and Daniels…it wouldn’t be considered “one of the funniest films of all time.”

Earlier this year, Farrelly announced a “Dumb and Dumber” sequel, starring Carrey and Daniels, is scheduled to be released in 2014. The only reason I mention it is because Farrelly himself will be directing it, unlike the unwatchable prequel “Dumb and Dumberer,” directed by Troy Miller.
